Hundreds of people, including the president of Ghana, have paid their last respects to footballer Christian Atsu, who lost his life in the tragic earthquake in Turkey last month.

His funeral is being held in Ghana's capital, Accra.

"I loved you when you were alive, I will love you the same now" , said the tearful widow of the footballer Marie-Claire Rupio.

She was unable to read the speech due to pain and passed it on to her sister to finish reading the prepared speech.

" You didn't leave alone, because a part of me is with you," she continued. "I see your smile, your love in the smiles of our children."

Representatives of Ghana's national team and Turkish club Hatayspor also attended the tributes to the late footballer.

Atsu's body was found two weeks after the earthquake from the ruins of his apartment in Turkey.

The dead body was returned to Ghana almost 1 month ago and will be buried in his native village in South East Ghana.

The 31-year-old spent most of his career playing in the English Premier League for clubs such as Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton.

He also made 65 appearances for Ghana and helped the national team reach the finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
