Dutch police have launched an investigation into the death of Italian footballer Gabriele Gallani in Amsterdam after falling into a canal.

The 24-year-old, who was captain of the amateur team from the Parma region, Picardo Traversettolo, died on Saturday morning shortly after he fell into a canal in the Dutch capital. According to Italian media, Gallani fell into the canal while walking with friends. His disappearance was not immediately noticed, as the footballer had stayed a little later.

The Italian player was in critical condition when divers found him in the water. He was taken to hospital, but died a few hours later. Police have launched an investigation into his death, with officers collecting CCTV footage in the area and appealing for information from anyone who may have been an eyewitness.

"The police are looking for witnesses who know more about how the victim ended up in the water. Around 00:35, local police officers received a call to go to the scene, where citizens reported that someone was in the water.

Several firefighters immediately arrived at the scene and managed to pull the victim out of the water. He was resuscitated and taken to the hospital. The victim could not make it and died a little later in the hospital", the police report states.

Picardo Traversetolo, a fifth-tier team in Italy, posted a tribute to Gallani on social media.

"He was a silent leader on the field, an example for his teammates. A boy with a kind and respectful soul. We will forever hold you in our hearts.”
