Researchers raise the alarm: Excessive use of paracetamol damages this body organ

Researchers raise the alarm: Excessive use of paracetamol damages this body

According to a recent study from the University of Edinburgh, liver damage is caused by overuse of paracetamol, a common painkiller.

New information showed how the popular painkiller damages the liver. Studies conducted in rats revealed an association with overdose toxicity, which is sometimes fatal and difficult to cure.

The study may help guide research and treatments to mitigate the adverse effects of the drug, which is a major cause of acute liver pain.

The researchers concluded how paracetamol affected liver cells in both human and mouse tissue.

Their findings showed that under certain circumstances, paracetamol can damage the liver by interfering with structural junctions, which are essential for the proper functioning of neighboring cells in the liver.

Tight junctions are connections between cells in the cell wall that, when disrupted, damage the structure of the liver tissue, impairing cell function and possibly causing cell death.

Although this type of cell destruction has been linked to liver diseases such as cancer, cirrhosis and hepatitis, it has not previously been linked to paracetamol toxicity.

Researchers now aim to develop a reliable method of using human liver cells as an alternative to animal testing.

Next, they will look at how different doses and times of paracetamol affect liver toxicity and identify potential targets for new drugs.

Paracetamol is the most popular pain reliever in the world, as it is affordable, safe and effective when used as directed.

However, drug-induced liver injury remains an important clinical problem and an obstacle to the development of safer drugs.

The findings highlight the need for caution in the use of paracetamol and may provide insights to reduce the harm that may result from inappropriate use.

Dr. Leonard Nelson from the Laboratory of Hepatology and Institute for Bioengineering, emphasizes the importance of these studies in understanding and preventing paracetamol-related harm.
