Everyone has touched their fingers on a hot iron or taken a pan out of the oven and accidentally burned themselves. In such a situation, should you rush to get ice and press it on the burned area?

Dermatologists say this is the worst thing you can do and that an ice pack will only cause the skin the most damage. It is the same with washing the wound with alcohol. The skin should be helped with something that will not traumatize it further. "Even cold water can increase the risk of infections", explains dr. Allan Capin, emergency medicine specialist.

"For minor burns, you can apply cold water (not ice) by placing - for example, your hand under the tap and holding it like that for five to twenty minutes," explains the doctor.

After that, gently wipe off the water and apply a moisturizing agent, then protect the wound with a cotton compress or bandage, being careful not to stick the patch on the surface of the damaged skin. If you have severe pain, you can take an analgesic.

While the burn is healing, maintain regular hygiene, wash the area with lukewarm soap and apply antibiotic cream to prevent infection.

In the case of bigger burns, you should seek the help of a doctor and this happens when:

? the burn is wider than 10 cm,
? the burned skin covers the joint,
? the burn is on the face, neck, leg or hand,
? the burn hurts for more than two weeks, or
? does not heal continuously.

Second degree burns are those in which blisters appear on the skin. Then you should never try to forcefully remove clothing from the burned area. Also, do not spray any first aid sprays or apply ointments, as this will only slow the release of heat from the injured body part.

Popping blisters is not allowed, as this can lead to infection, but professional help should be sought. These burns can also lead to tetanus.

Third-degree burns are those in which the skin turns black or the injury reaches the bone. They require immediate medical attention.
