Doctors at Cancer Research UK have warned that people who develop mouth cancer often have mouth bleeding.

So if you can feel drops of blood in your mouth, you should talk to your GP.

Although this is one of the less common signs, there are eight more common symptoms to watch out for.

Ulcers

The ulcer itself is usually not a problem and disappears within a few days. But if it can't be cured, experts say it could be a common sign of oral cancer.

Pain

"Pain, discomfort, or swelling in the mouth that does not go away is the second most common symptom of oral cancer," the guidelines state.

Red or white spots

Changes in the mouth can be a sign of oral cancer, experts say. These include red patches, known as erythroplakia, and white patches called leukoplakia. It doesn't have to be cancer, but it definitely needs treatment.

Problems with swallowing

If you feel pain while eating, burning while chewing or problems swallowing, then it could be caused by oral cancer. Other signs include feeling like food is stuck in your throat.

A lump in the neck

You may have a lump in your neck due to an enlarged lymph node, experts said. Swelling in one or more lymph nodes in the neck is a common sign of mouth cancer and oropharyngeal cancer, according to the guidelines. But if you have a red and painful lump, then it is usually not a sign of cancer and indicates an infection.

Bad breath

Many people suffer from bad breath from time to time and this is usually due to the food we have consumed. But if you have cancer, bad breath may be worse or occur more often, experts warn. Along with these symptoms, you may also experience a lump or thickening of the lip, a lump in the mouth or throat, and loose teeth for no particular reason. You may also have difficulty moving your jaw, a sore throat, or an earache that doesn't go away for several days.
