If you feel constantly tired recently, you should visit your doctor and through tests determine if you have a deficiency in a specific nutrient.
Dietitian Lindsey Klein argues that there is one nutrient that plays a role in preventing fatigue and that is fiber.
"Even though fiber doesn't provide energy, it helps regulate energy," she says.
There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble.
Soluble fiber, found in foods such as oats, beans, lentils, vegetables, fruits and whole grains, absorbs water, swells and forms a gel-like substance that aids the digestive system.
When soluble fiber is present, it slows the rate at which sugar enters the cells. This helps keep blood sugar levels stable.
Without soluble fiber, Klein says blood sugar levels tend to rise and fall, which can lead to similar fluctuations in your energy levels. But he points out that you also need insoluble fiber, both of which are essential for good digestion.
"Fiber is also filling and has a good effect," says Klein. This means less hunger and more ability to focus on other tasks. When you provide your body with enough calories and fiber, your brain won't think "when is my next meal". It will enable focusing on the present moment."
