David Andrew Sinclair, a biologist, professor of genetics and co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School, is best known for his work on understanding why we age and how to slow its effects.
To date, Dr. Sinclair has chosen not to promote or endorse any nutritional supplement for the purpose of slowing aging and its symptoms, but also for a better quality of life in general.
However, from time to time in interviews and books he writes, he refers to the various preparations he takes himself. Specifically, so far what he has mentioned are a series of 12 substances, most of them natural, but it is not known if the list is complete or if there are additional substances that he has not made public.
The list that emerged from the statements of Dr. Sinclair, in relation to substances that "promise" longevity and slow down the health problems caused by aging is formulated as follows:
Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) : It is a substance present in some green vegetables and has the property of reducing the signs of aging. We find it in abundance in broccoli, cabbage, avocado, cucumber, soy, tomatoes, etc.
Resveratrol : It is a plant compound that acts as an antioxidant. It is found mainly in red wine, grapes, some berries and peanuts and studies have shown that it can reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and neurodegeneration. Studies show positive results in relation to various diseases such as heart disease and arthritis.
Metformin: This is a prescription drug used to treat high blood sugar levels. In studies done, it was found that diabetics who took metformin lived longer than healthy non-diabetics who apparently did not take metformin. However, taking metformin can have side effects and doctors' instructions should be followed closely.
Vitamin D3 : The human body receives vitamin D from the sun and certain foods. Its deficiency has been associated with an increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, autoimmune diseases and Alzheimer's disease. We can also get vitamin D from some foods, such as fish, cod liver oil, beef liver, eggs, milk, etc.
Vitamin K2 : Vitamin K is important for the health of bones as well as blood vessels and mitochondria, while improving skin health. Some scientists argue that people at risk of heart disease should regularly use vitamin K2 supplements, while others point out that more studies are needed before firm recommendations can be made.
