A study published in the Wall Street Journal says that in order to understand how food affects sleep, we need to learn what happens in the body when we close our eyes to sleep.

What happens in our body when we sleep?

Body functions slow down while the brain remains active. Body temperature drops while breathing slows and blood pressure drops.

The muscles relax while the brain produces an amino acid that calms the entire nervous system. Hormones suffer a significant decrease starting with that of stress. Hormones such as ghrelin and leptin which regulate appetite and satiety levels are in full balance.

Insulin levels rise to regulate blood sugar while melatonin and serotonin synchronize the sleep-wake cycle.

The foods we eat can significantly affect each of the aforementioned functions. Let's take the case of ice cream. Experts advise that people eat ice cream at lunch and not at dinner.

If eaten at lunch, the sugar level will have the right time to balance. If you eat ice cream for dinner, the digestive system has to work harder to digest it and therefore affects the quality of sleep.

Experts say that eating too late and before bed puts the digestive system to work at a time when it should be resting.

If the digestive system is at work, the body temperature will increase, the sugar level will decrease and all this will disturb your sleep.

The lack of quality sleep then encourages the person to make unhealthy choices in terms of food and is thus more at risk of diseases.
