Eggplant is one of the most beloved vegetables for Albanians. We make it pickled, cook it in the casserole or make it into a mash. According to the data, eggplant is not even a vegetable. Eggplant is a botanical fruit that is cooked like a vegetable. It belongs to the Solanacaea family which is related to tomatoes, peppers and potatoes.

Eggplants in small size have a fairly thin skin and taste sweeter than large eggplants. In Albania, eggplant has been cultivated for centuries and is an integral part of local cuisine. Its use remains part of the oriental tradition of cooking with the best example that of the 'imam bajalldi' casserole but also the new forms of cooking as part of the turli with boiled vegetables are traditional for Albanians.
