To begin with, this is not a new methodology: Tim Ferris, a fitness, weight loss and health expert, had already talked about it in his 2010 book The 4-Hour Body, ie. "4 hours for your body". It was relaunched on social media by biologist, researcher and biohacker Gary Brecka and went viral.

What is the 30-30-30 method

In one of his videos, the researcher says: "I have never seen anything in my life that removes fat from the human body faster than this method." A bold statement that almost makes you believe he was the one who patented the idea. What is it about?

The goal is to eat 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up in the morning, followed by 30 minutes of low-intensity cardiovascular exercise, such as walking, making sure your heart rate is at or below 135 bpm. Brecka says that after a month of continuous practice, "you will see the change in your body". But will it really be like that? What do the experts think?

Benefits of eating protein in the morning

According to some American nutritionists, eating protein first thing in the morning helps stabilize glucose and insulin levels.

When you wake up and drink coffee on an empty stomach, or eat something high in sugar and carbs like croissants or cereal, it causes a huge spike in cortisol, because of the caffeine. Additionally, it also generates an insulin spike from sugar or simple carbohydrates.

Not only can this lead to weight gain or an inability to keep the pounds off, it can also wreak havoc on your hormones. Protein first thing in the morning can help keep glucose levels stable, boost your metabolism and reduce food cravings for the rest of the day. 30 minutes of low-intensity cardio helps digestion, reduces inflammation, reduces cortisol, and increases serotonin and dopamine.

According to Brecka, most of his patients wake up, drink coffee, then do an intense workout and expect to lose weight.

The 30-30-30 method, not just protein

Eating protein as a breakfast food ensures that your body has a constant source of energy, so it doesn't need to feed on muscle mass. Brecka also explains that since the body burns fat at rest, steady-state cardiovascular exercise, with a heart rate at or below 135 Bpm, ensures that the body burns fat. If it exceeds 135 beats/min, the body switches energy sources and therefore can burn lean muscle instead of fat.
