Experts have agreed that gluteal fat transfer is currently the most dangerous plastic surgery procedure. According to plastic surgeon Samuel Lin, MD, "death can occur as often as one in 2351 BBL (Brazilian butt lift)."

However, it is noted that BBL remains an extremely popular procedure, and more than 21,000 such operations were performed by board-certified surgeons in the US in 2020.

When fat is injected into the buttocks, it can sometimes enter the larger blood vessels in the gluteal area. "The fat then ends up in the lungs, which can cause breathing problems and, in severe cases, death," says Ourian.

The complication is called "pulmonary fat embolism".

Just because BBL is a risky procedure doesn't mean it can't be performed safely.

It is important that a surgeon performing a BBL is experienced in the procedure and trained in the safest techniques.
