Previous research has shown that lack of sleep increases several cardiovascular risk factors, including blood sugar levels, stress, inflammation and obesity.

The researchers, led by Dr. José Ordovas of the National Cardiovascular Research Center in Madrid and Tufts University in the US, who published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, analyzed data on nearly 4,000 people with an average age of 46 (no cardiac history and two-thirds male). . After being divided into groups according to the duration of sleep, they underwent various tests (ultrasound, heart scan, etc.).

He found that those who slept less than six hours were on average 27% more likely to have atherosclerosis than those who slept seven to eight hours. In particular, those who slept poorly were 34% more likely to have atherosclerosis than those who slept well and deeply.

The quality of sleep depends on how many times a person wakes up during the night and how mobile and restless they are before sleep, reports APE-MPE.

The researchers pointed out that "it is important to understand that less sleep, but of good quality, can offset the harmful effects of shorter duration".

Additionally, evidence was found that sleeping more than eight hours a day may also be associated with an increased likelihood of atherosclerosis. It was also found that those who sleep little and poorly consume more alcohol and coffee.
