Dementia is a global medical problem, especially acute nowadays, given the increase in average life expectancy. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia occurring in 60%-80% of cases.

According to studies, factors that reduce the risk of atherosclerotic diseases and vascular damage - such as regulation of blood pressure and diabetes mellitus, as well as physical exercise - can also reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease by up to 50%.

The Mediterranean diet also improves other health problems such as hypertension and diabetes, which indirectly affect the blood vessels of the brain, reducing the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. The Mediterranean diet ensures the best blood supply to the brain and the protection of mental functions

What should you eat to reduce your risk of dementia?

To answer this question we would say "yes" to fruits and vegetables every day, fish 2-3 times a week, olive oil every day, legumes and whole grains, and moderate consumption of nuts.

On the other hand, we avoid fried foods, red meat, salt, sugar and modified products. We have as a basis the Mediterranean diet and foods with a low glycemic index for sugar regulation. Also, we prefer non-salty foods to regulate blood pressure and antioxidants (pomegranates, berries), because they contain phenols that prevent neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and regulate the normal functioning of the cardiovascular system.

Caffeine intake, whether from coffee or green tea (100-400 mg/day), has been shown to help, especially women, later develop symptoms of cognitive decline. This happens either because of the antioxidant effect of caffeine or because of the increased alertness it causes.
