Reproductive biology Grace Dagdal warns that while a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and legumes is healthy, a vegan diet can cause problems for women trying to conceive.

Given that the vegan diet lacks important nutrients, she advises that it may be helpful to start consuming less meat and fish again.

Vegans are at risk for a lack of zinc, iron and vitamin B12 because they do not eat meat. Another problem is the lack of omega-3 fatty acids, which are obtained from fatty fish and iodine found in white fish.

"If vegans and vegetarians do not get the right supplements, they may have to make up for that lack to replenish their body supply of these nutrients," said Dagdal, who spoke at the Fertility Show in London. hr.

She also said they fully understand the ethical and environmental reasons why people choose a vegan diet.

"Sometimes I tell women who are trying to get pregnant but have reduced levels of these nutrients, that it would be good for them to start eating smaller amounts of meat and fish," Dagdal added.
