Distribution of the Assembly of Kosovo? Memli Krasniqi puts an end to the dilemma: It is already exhausted, I feel sorry that we cannot have early elections
Written by SOT.COM.AL 29 Maj 2024
The chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Memli Krasniqi, said on Wednesday that all possibilities for the dissolution of the Kosovo parliament have been exhausted, which would pave the way for the organization of early elections in the country.
"The Democratic Party came out with its position even proposing two specific dates for early elections, June 30 and July 7. Today, May 29, as I stated as the deadline in the letter sent to the three political leaders of the parliamentary parties, feeling sorry for the state and the citizens, I inform you that the possibility of dissolving the parliament of Kosovo has already been exhausted", he said in a conference the press.
This initiative of the Democratic Party followed a meeting two weeks ago between the chairman of this party, Memli Krasniqi, and Prime Minister Albin Kurti, in which the new elections were also discussed.
The Vetëvendosje movement in power has expressed its readiness to support the dissolution of the parliament if it is supported by all opposition parties.
The Democratic League and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo in the opposition insist on the resignation of Prime Minister Albin Kurti as a condition for the dissolution of the parliament.
The Democratic League said on Wednesday in an announcement that at the second meeting of the General Council, "the position of the president, Lumir Abdixhiku and the Presidency regarding the early elections in the country was unanimously approved... The Prime Minister must resign for his failures in every field , then to dissolve the Assembly and at the very end to set the date of the elections".
Today, Mr. Krasniqi criticized both of these parties for not supporting the initiative, stressing that in this case the goal was more important than the method.
"The refusal to go to early elections remains surprising for us. I don't want to speculate whether the other opposition parties are unprepared, whether they need more time, but one thing I know - I don't remember any other case in the history of parliamentary democracy where the government says 'let's go to the elections, I'm ready' ' and the opposition says 'don't continue the mandate until the end'. This is difficult for me to understand but also to justify" , said the leader of the Democratic Party, Memli Krasniqi.
The speaker of the Kosovo parliament who comes from the ruling party, Glauk Konjufca, said today that the dissolution of the parliament requires broad consensus and not only between the two parties.
"If the consensus of all subjects is not reached to go further, being sure that we have more than 80 deputies and not to be at the limit because the distribution of the parliament may not be done, as you know it requires two thirds of the votes and only the majority with the Democratic Party of Kosovo would be at the limit of this number. This is the reason why we asked for a wider consensus, there was no consensus in the opposition camp, so I think that the chances of the parliament being dissolved have decreased quite a lot in the last few days" , he said.
The current government's mandate ends at the beginning of 2025. Throughout it, opposition parties have criticized the government's approach to political processes and its Western allies, accusing it of failure in its efforts to join the Council of Europe./VOA
