"Beatings, rapes, and kidnappings", shock the neighboring country's record figures for victims of domestic violence

"Beatings, rapes, and kidnappings", shock the neighboring

Nine murders, 26 serious injuries, 675 bodily injuries, 389 cases of endangering security, 15 forced coercions as well as three kidnappings, or a total of 1,117 criminal offenses related to domestic violence, occurred within the territory of Macedonia. North during 2022.

This is the overview presented in the data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), according to which the largest number of criminal offenses related to domestic violence was registered in the Skopje region with a total of 279, followed by the region of Bitola. with 203 criminal offenses. In third place is the region of Tetova, where the Department of Internal Affairs of this municipality has registered 145 criminal offences. In the last place is Veles, with 85 such works.

Meanwhile, a total of 1,191 victims of domestic violence were registered. Among them, the largest number is women, namely 942, half of whom are registered as wives in a family union. However, there are also about 120 women victims of domestic violence in extramarital unions.

In a series of violence, neither children nor parents were spared. The authorities have registered 44 girls and 58 boys as victims, as well as 100 mothers and 86 fathers.

The largest number of perpetrators of criminal acts of domestic violence are men, namely 1 thousand 61. About half of them are spouses. However, sons were also registered as perpetrators, in 171 cases. About 50 ex-spouses are also included in the registers as perpetrators of criminal offenses related to domestic violence.

In 2022, men are also presented as victims in 249 cases. Of them, 25 were in a marital union, while three were registered as part of an extramarital union.

But more worrying are the numbers when it comes to rape and sexual assault. In the first three months of last year, two rapes where the victims were adult women were recorded. Five sexual assaults against children, namely persons under the age of 14, were registered. Four of them were girls, while a boy was also registered as a victim of sexual violence.

These records also include an act committed by force against a vulnerable person where the victim was a minor girl.

In the march of the protest that was held in Skopje on the occasion of the International Women's Day, a large number of activists said that they do not feel safe.

However, non-governmental organizations emphasize that the protection of victims of domestic violence, namely women and children, is not sufficient. /VOA
