French President Emmanuel Macron has a dizzying list of tasks this week: trying to find solutions to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stopping the melting of the ice and dealing with the challenges of artificial intelligence. And that's just a glimpse of the agenda of this week's diplomatic marathon in Paris that brings together leaders, diplomats and NGO workers from around the world. The theme of this year's Peace Forum is "The Paris Pact for People and Planet". In this long list, it seems strange that the French leader has time for Kosovo and Serbia, but here we are. Yesterday, which was also the first day of the two-day forum, it was the foreign media that raised hypotheses that the prime minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the president of Serbia, Aleksandër Vucic, could have a chance for a direct confrontation. According to Euroactive, such a possible meeting would be an opportunity to discuss the Western proposal for the normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations.

The EU's intentions

Analysts believe that EU politicians need a quick win and that they will try to use the Paris Peace Forum to send messages to the region to accept the European Union's proposals that are on the table. "Europeans need some kind of political success by the end of the year. I don't believe this will happen, but the drama surrounding Kosovo will continue for a long time," said Miroslav Stojanovic, foreign policy analyst for the Serbian newspaper "Blic". According to him, one of the topics should certainly be Brussels' proposal for the formation of the Union of Serbian Municipalities (USO). Slobodan Zecevic from the Institute for European Studies tells "Kosovo Online" that "threats will be realized" in those meetings.

The rush of the West

Stojanovic says that the West is in a hurry and that is why the acceleration of diplomatic efforts to finish things as soon as possible is happening, because we are entering a critical year in which the elections for the European institutions and the presidential elections in the USA will follow. . Stojanovic emphasizes that the situation for both the EU and the USA is increasingly dramatic because they are entering a delicate period. "That's why now it has risen to an extremely high level, so in the last meetings in Brussels we also had the heads of the three most influential countries of the EU, which has never happened in such situations," says Stojanovic. He adds that there will certainly be talk about the so-called Ohrid agreement, which, he recalls, was formulated in imitation of the agreement between the two Germans in 1973. "The whole battle is being waged to ensure the transition to the United Nations for Kosovo . It is an almost impossible mission, even if Serbia would accept it", Stojanovic assesses.

"Shuffling the Cards"

Stojanovic believes that the cards will certainly be shuffled in the European Parliament, because the right is gaining strength in a large number of countries and that the political terrain will undoubtedly change. Then we enter the uncertain US presidential election. "We must also add the international situation, which is extremely dramatic. The war in the Middle East is more dramatic than the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, because that conflict can spread like the lava of war and get out of control," concludes Stojanovic. Since the end of October, it is known that the EU and the USA are insisting that Serbia de facto recognize Kosovo, while Kosovo creates the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority. However, the signals arriving from Belgrade show that even this round is not going to be easy for the internationals. After the American ambassador in Pristina, Jeffrey Hovenier, declared a day ago that the international community insists on the urgent formation of the Community of Municipalities with a Serbian majority, the director of the Office for Kosovo, Petar Petkovic, said that the Association "will never be a non-governmental organization in within which the representatives of some western agencies in Pristina would like to place him". While Vucic himself has openly declared that he will never sign the independence of Kosovo.
