Convicted of crimes against civilians, Interpol requests an arrest warrant for

A court in Bosnia and Herzegovina has ordered the issuance of an international arrest warrant for Sakib Mahmul, convicted of war crimes against the Serb civilian population during the Bosnian war in the 1990s, Radio Free Europe has confirmed.

The order was issued after Mahmulin, a former commander of the third corps of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, failed to respond to a summons on November 23 to begin serving a prison sentence.

The Directorate for the Coordination of Police Bodies in Bosnia and Herzegovina told REL that until the publication of this news, the Central National Bureau of Interpol in Sarajevo has not reached the request for the issuance of the arrest warrant.

What has Mahmulin been sentenced for?
Mahmulin was sentenced to eight years in prison for crimes against detained Serb civilians, medical personnel and soldiers in the Vozuqa and Zavidovic areas in central Bosnia.

The Bosnian court and the final decision against Mahmulin after the court proceedings resumed on December 7 last year.

The decision of the first instance was rejected by the Court of Appeal in November 2021. According to the original decision, Mahmulin was sentenced to ten years in prison.

In the indictment, it was stated that Mahmulin had not taken any action to prevent the war crimes committed by the members of "Al Mujahidin" against the prisoners of war and the Serbian civilians in the area of ??Zavidovic and Vozuca.

In October 1995, members of this detachment had killed close to 50 prisoners of war and Serbian civilians in the vicinity of Vozuca and Zavidovic. The members of this military department operated within the third corps of the army led by Mahmulin.

In the indictment it was also stated that Mahmulin "had information that the members of this group were preparing to commit crimes and after committing the crimes he had not taken any action to punish the perpetrators".

Mahmulin has also been accused of committing war crimes against prisoners of war, war crimes against the wounded and sick, and war crimes against the civilian population.

The former top commander of the Bosnian army, Rasim Delic, has also faced charges at the Hague Tribunal for the crimes committed by the "Al Mujahidin" detachment, but he was acquitted after the court did not find that Delic knew that these crimes were being committed. were carried out or that they had been carried out./REL
