The trial against Ndragheta, hundreds of members of the criminal organization are sentenced to imprisonment
Written by SOT.COM.AL 21 Nëntor 2023
In a Calabrian court, more than 200 people were convicted on Monday, as part of the mafia. They belong to a local organized crime group.
Crimes of extortion, drug trafficking and weapons were some of the charges against members of the mafia group and their associates.
Among those convicted are at least two high-ranking members of the so-called 'Ndrangheta. Each was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Among them is Giancarlo Pitteli, a former lawyer, now 70 years old, who is expected to spend the next 11 years behind bars. He is accused of protecting members of the Calabrian criminal group.
Of the almost 340 accused, 131 were acquitted.
The convictions conclude an investigation that began in 2016 against the Mancuso family, one of the Ndrangheta's most important clans.
Most of the suspects were arrested in 2019 and the trial opened in January 2020.
It took the judges an hour and 40 minutes to read the verdict in a room specially prepared for this trial.
These sentences are still subject to appeal.
