North Macedonia has expelled three Russian diplomats, which marks the third expulsion of diplomats from this country since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia announced on Saturday, September 16, that the diplomats were expelled due to their "activity in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations", without giving further details about what activities are involved. .
"On September 12, the ambassador of the Russian Federation was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was handed a diplomatic note, with which three diplomats at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Skopje were declared persona non grata [undesirable persons]. notification of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The information about the declaration of Russian diplomats as "undesirable persons" was initially made known by the Russian Embassy on September 15.
The decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia was published on the social network X - previously known as Twitter, and the comment of the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Maria Zakharova, was conveyed in the post.
For Russia, declaring three diplomats undesirable is an "irresponsible and hostile act".
"On September 12, the authorities of North Macedonia, without clarifying the reasons, declared 'persona non grata' to three diplomats of the Russian Embassy in Skopje. The irresponsible and hostile step of the authorities of North Macedonia will not go unanswered", says the statement of the Russian Embassy.
In March and April of 2022, North Macedonia expelled 11 Russian diplomats, with the same reasoning, namely "violation of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations".
In response to this decision, Russia expelled a Macedonian diplomat from the North Macedonian Embassy in Moscow.
In the Russian Embassy in Skopje, it has been reported that there are a total of 19 Russian diplomats, together with the ambassador and two military representatives.
After the Russian aggression against Ukraine, on February 24, 2022, North Macedonia, as a member of NATO and aspirant for membership in the European Union, joined the Western countries that condemned the aggression and imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation.
