Vetingu confirmed 91 prosecutors and dismissed 50, Balla: 103 new prosecutors are needed in the system, the vacancies will be filled for about 4-5 years

Filling vacancies in the prosecutor's office takes about 4-5 years, with a rate of 25-26 prosecutors appointed per year. Alfred Balla, the chairman of the High Council of Prosecution, while reporting yesterday to the Law Commission, said that the vetting has created a big gap in the ranks of the Prosecution. "We expect 105 prosecutors to enter the system in these 4-5 years. We have never managed to have 341 full prosecutors according to the structure. I remember there are still 70 prosecutors who have not completed their vetting", said Alfred Balla. In order to solve the problem of vacancies, Balla asked the legislators to find an unblocking mechanism to bring in more prosecutors from the magistracy. "For this year that we asked for 40 candidates from the magistracy, 26 passed," said Balla. He said that the passing rate in the vetting process for prosecutors is 54%, while there are 70 prosecutors still in the process. "In 2022, a total of 91 prosecutors were confirmed from the vetting, 50 were dismissed. Since the start of the vetting, 21 prosecutors resigned, 11 have retired," said Balla. The head of the High Prosecution Council added that there are 8 prosecutors who requested protection for their lives during 2022. "Measures were taken for their protection. Today, prosecutors are more protected than ever", said Balla.
