Albania falls by 83 places in the global education report, former minister Tafaj shows the main causes of the drastic decline

Albania falls by 83 places in the global education report, former minister Tafaj

Albania is ranked 116th in the world by the Global Economic Forum in terms of Education, while a year ago it was ranked 33rd, suffering a drop of 83 places.

The former Minister of Education, Professor Dr. Myqerem Tafaj, invited to a television program, said that fewer students go to high school today and that the number of graduates has suffered a drastic decrease. Tafaj said that depopulation also has consequences for education, since people who live in remote areas of Albania do not have a kindergarten or school in their residence or teach in common classes.

Myqerem Tafaj: Albania has suffered a drop of more than 80 places. I believe that the Pisa 2022 report played a major role in this decline in education. Eight percent fewer 9-year-old students do not go to high school. So fewer students go to high school. More 9-year and secondary education has been abandoned. Abandonment is related to poverty, but also to impossibility. This happens more in rural areas. We have mass emigration of citizens to more remote areas, let's say. If an area is depopulated, there is no more kindergarten, no more school. The number of graduates has decreased drastically. The birth rate has decreased significantly and emigration has increased. In the quality of education, we are not improving as much as we should.

The only criterion to measure the quality of education is the international test. We have to see where we are in relation to the countries of the region and then to the EU countries, we have a long way to go. As for the university, candidates who want to run for dean should rely on the objectives.
