"The attitude towards Berisha has not changed"/ The American diplomat

The US charge d'affaires in Tirana, David Wisner, said that the attitude towards Sali Berisha has not changed. In an interview for the Voice of America, the American diplomat stated that the US does not engage with persons declared non grata.

He said that they are working with political parties, with civil society, with people across the spectrum to try to make Albania a better country.

When asked about the position regarding the third mandate of the SP in power, Wisner said that everyone is looking forward to next year's elections.

He also welcomed the return of the opposition to the Parliament after several months of boycott.

Part of the interview

Mr. Wisner, as never before, a political force has ruled the country for three terms, has control of the vast majority of the country's municipalities. On the other hand, we have had a fragmented opposition for two years. Is such a situation healthy for a democratic country?

David Wisner: As a general principle, open, lively debate is important to any democracy. In the same way, I think it is fantastic to see that the opposition has returned to parliament and has resumed its functions in the way that Albanian citizens expect. I would say that I think we all look forward to the elections next year. It is a really important opportunity for Albanian politicians to present their ideas to Albanian citizens, to use the opportunity to develop a lively debate, and I think it will be a great moment for Albania.

You welcomed the agreement between the majority and the opposition that restored normality in parliamentary life. However, in the hall of the parliament we have a reconfiguration on the side of the opposition, where the vast majority of the democratic deputies recognize former prime minister Sali Berisha as their leader. A few months ago, in a statement, the American embassy reiterated its position regarding persons declared non grata, urging all actors to carefully examine their engagements with such figures. What will be your relationship with these actors, or more precisely with the reconstituted democratic parliamentary group?

David Wisner: Armand, our position has not changed. We continue not to engage with persons declared non-grata under our corruption sanctions. And I would note that those sanctions have spanned the entire political spectrum, despite what some people here like to say. So what we are doing here is that we are working with political parties, with civil society, with people across the spectrum to try to make Albania a better country, of course. But in the same aspect, as I said before, what Albanians really want are people who work for the interests of the Albanian people and not for their personal interests. And I think the future of this country does not lie with people involved in corruption. And political parties must present important ideas, must present real governing alternatives. And, of course, they must present candidates that people want to vote for. I have a lot of faith when I hear Albanians tell me that they want to turn the page, and they want to have real options that work in their interest.
