The agreement with Italy for refugees, Minister Balla reacts
Written by SOT.COM.AL 10 Nëntor 2023
Interior Minister Taulant Balla stated that the agreement with Italy is proof of the solidarity offered by Albania, although it is clear that it does not solve the problem of migrants in Europe. In response to the interest of the media, from Fieri, Balla said that if you ask any Albanian citizen today about the special relationship between Albania and Italy, they all give us the right that Albania and Italy are very connected to each other.
"Equally true is the fact that we are very grateful to Italy for all the support and care, let's never forget March 1991, July 1991 when Albanian citizens took EU ships and left for a better life in Italy. Italian hospitality, treatment, integration and today the Albanians are a good model of integration in Italy. It is simply a question that in case today Italy faces a very big challenge of migratory flows, coming from the north of Africa and when today in Italy there are hundreds of reception centers, maybe over 3000. One of these 3000, to be placed in Albania. As we speak today, there are over 80,000 in the reception centers and 3,000 of them are being processed for the asylum application process", said the minister.
He further clarified that none of the migrants will stay in Albania.
"It is written in the agreement, no one will stay in Albania. They will come by ship, they will be accommodated in that Reception Center, which is with all the conditions, that will be built by the Italian government. The responsibility of construction, care, is the Italian government. The only responsibility they share with us, but with payment, is that the State Police of Albania will ensure that no one leaves that center irregularly," Balla underlined.
Further, the minister commented on the media statements of various actors.
"Of course it is a process, because I have heard some of these great 'professors' who come out and then say that this contradicts international law. I think it should be handled with care. It is an agreement between two governments. Naturally, it will go through the ratification procedure in the Assembly. I have heard some great 'professors' say, where is the "omnipotence"?!
Therefore, please, Albania has always been close to Italy, just as Italy has been close to Albania dozens of times, when we have had difficult days, either in 1991, with the Italian support and aid missions, or in 1997. Naturally, today Italy faces with a challenge and Albania is giving an example of solidarity. We cannot solve the problem! I told you, the numbers are like this, so out of 3000 centers, 1 will be in Albania. It is not that we are solving a problem, but we are setting an example of solidarity, which has not been lacking. Remember, 3 years ago, in April 2020, at the time of Covid, Albania, although it had its own difficulties, a number of 50 nurses and doctors were sent to Italy to support the Italian people and the Italian government in the context of the needs that they had for doctors and nurses. Also, in this challenge that Italy has, we are giving a small percentage of support, to show our solidarity in facing this and don't forget that Europe today has a very big challenge in facing migration.
Naturally, as a country we want to join the EU, and membership does not only have benefits, so we want to receive funds from the EU, but it also has responsibility, solidarity. This government has had and continues to have responsibility and solidarity as part of its approach", the Minister of the Interior emphasized.
