The law that forces them to work in the country for up to 3 years after completing their studies, Medical Students in Strasbourg against the Albanian government

The law that forces them to work in the country for up to 3 years after

The Albanian state has been sued by medical students at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

Their lawsuit is related to the law imposed by the government that forces them to work in the country for up to 3 years after completing their studies.

This step of the Medical Students came after they did not agree with the decision of the Constitutional Court, which was partially based on their demands.

Medical students have filed a lawsuit against the Albanian state at the European Court of Human Rights. Their lawsuit is related to the law established by the government that forces them to work for up to 3 years after completing their studies, as otherwise they will not be awarded a diploma.

In the lawsuit compiled by the students, it is stated, among other things, that "the mandatory work scheme drawn up by the contested law differs fundamentally from the notion of "residency" which is a regulatory requirement to be able to obtain a license and to worked as a doctor".

They further write that "during the hearing, the lawyer of the Council of Ministers admitted that students in financial need who benefited from social assistance did not have the right to choose".

Medical students request that this issue be examined by this court as well, as they do not agree with the decision given by the Constitutional Court, which partially based their requests. The changes proposed by the government start implementation from the new academic year 2024-2025 and will have an effect until 2029.
