The former Foreign Minister reacts to Greece's threats to Beleri: the problems must be solved diplomatically, both sides are wrong
Written by SOT.COM.AL 29 Nëntor 2023
During a television interview, former Foreign Minister Paskal Milo said that Greece has officially declared that the condition of Albania's accession to the EU is to allow Fredi Beleri to be sworn in as the mayor of Himara.
Regarding this issue, Milo said that this position had been announced for weeks by the Greek Prime Minister. Milo said that the possibility of finding a compromise to solve the problems should be sought in diplomatic ways and not in declarative ways.
"It is not new news if today there is an official statement from the Greek government that it has been warned for weeks. The Greek Prime Minister himself has warned of such an attitude of Greece since he was here in Tirana, in an interview he gave a few weeks ago, as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministers of State who came to Tirana, have made it clear that there will be such a position in Greece in response to not allowing Beleri's oath.
This is a similarity that should not have happened, the mistakes are on both sides. It is the rush of the Albanian authorities to arrest Beleri in the so-called flagrante two days before the elections, it could have been handled differently by applying the law as it has been applied in other cases. The second is the intransigent position that Greece is maintaining in relation to Albania's European integration and the possible opening of the negotiations of the Second Intergovernmental Conference in December.
We are dealing with a chain reaction, that a hasty emotional action brings equally emotional political consequences from the other side. The possibility of finding a compromise to solve the problems should be sought in a diplomatic way and not in a declarative way because we are going in a direction that is not a matter of personal anger of one leader or the other but it is a matter that has to do with big problems, like the integration of Albania", said Milo.
According to Milos, the Beleri issue is so small in front of such a big issue as the European integration of Albania that there is no reason not to seek a solution.
"The Beleri issue is so small in front of such a big issue as the European integration of Albania that there is no reason not to seek a solution, if it is not clear the Albanian legislation at least does not exclude it because there have been other cases . This table tennis of institutions to judge this issue is not serious and must be given a solution.
We must not make it become an international issue, and that Albania becomes a problem in international forums, even in Brussels for an issue that could have reached an understanding between the two governments. The stubbornness on both sides to continue with their positions is harmful. It harms not only Albania in this particular case, not only bilateral relations between the two countries that are also considered as strategic partnership relations, and if this strategic partnership that deals with major issues that both countries must face cannot be resolved this issue, then it is questioned what kind of partnership this is.
We are dealing with a small problem that does not deserve so much attention and intransigent attitudes in front of a big problem that connects the two countries", added Milo.
