Storm in the local government, other mayors are expected to be fired, next week is set for early elections

Storm in the local government, other mayors are expected to be fired, next week

Signals are growing that the country could move towards local elections, following those held in parliament on Sunday (April 25th). On June 30, 2019, Albanian citizens went to the polls, voting for the mayors of 61 municipalities in the country, while the Socialist Party won these elections, because the opposition led by the Democratic Party boycotted them. But when almost 2 years have passed since these elections, the debate continues in the country. The opposition considers the local elections as illegitimate and as if that were not enough, today we are talking about 6 municipalities without a mayor, because 3 of the socialist elected have left, as they have been subject to the decriminalization law. The most recent case comes from Mallakastra, while the mayor, Qerim Ismailaj, risks being fired, because he lied in the decriminalization form, at a time he has been convicted in Greece. But the newspaper has learned from sources close to the Decriminalization Unit at the General Prosecutor's Office that more mayors are expected to be fired, thus deepening the crisis in local government and increasing the number of municipalities that must go to the polls. It is learned that from the investigations carried out so far, but also from the information received from the denunciations of citizens and political entities, some current mayors may be subject to the decriminalization law and consequently should be removed from office, as they have violated the law. This means that the country is expected to go to the local by-elections, because there are 6 municipalities without a mayor. The fate of local elections is decided next week

But if this were not enough and in the conditions when 6 municipalities are without a mayor, the chances are that the country can go to early local elections. The cause is expected to be an appeal that the Association of Albanian Municipalities filed in July 2019 in the Constitutional Court, as it considered the local election process of June 30 as unconstitutional due to the lack of alternatives in the elections. However, when almost 2 years have passed without a decision on this issue, the Constituent Assembly has decided to prioritize the request of the Association of Municipalities. Through a notice published on its official website, the Constitutional Court announces that the lawsuit of Ms. Ademi on behalf of the Association of Albanian Municipalities will be reviewed by the black platoon of the highest justice institution in the country on June 23 at 10:00. This means that after almost 2 years, finally next week we will find out whether the local elections of June 30 were legitimate or not, where the chances are that the Constitutional Court will decide in favor of the Association of Municipalities, thus overthrowing the local government. . So, next week the fate of local elections is decided. We recall that in addition to the mayor of Mallakastër who is expected to be dismissed, 5 municipalities are without a mayor, as is the case of Durrës, Shkodra, Vora, Rrogozhina and Dibra.
