Erdogan boycotts Edi Rama, here are the behind the scenes that led to the rupture of relations between Tirana and Istanbul

Erdogan boycotts Edi Rama, here are the behind the scenes that led to the

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan has boycotted the Prime Minister Rama and this is clearly shown by his last two moves that openly show a rift in the relations between Tirana and Istanbul. The first clear signal is the "Great Mosque of Namazgja". Erdogan warned in January that he would be present at her inauguration at the end of Ramadan, but that did not happen. The Turkish president did not come and the mosque continues to be held hostage by Erdogan. The second signal was when Prime Minister Rama announced a visit a few weeks ago to Turkey and Azerbaijan. But while the Albanian prime minister's visit to Azerbaijan was widely enriched on social media and networks, the same thing did not happen with Rama's visit to Turkey. This information darkness added to the suspicions that President Erdogan closed the door and did not receive him in Istanbul

But what happened between Erdogan and Rama?

In recent years, Prime Minister Rama has proven that he has good relations with the Turkish president, while the latter has stayed close to Albania in difficult days such as the tragedy caused by the deadly earthquake of November 26, 2019 and the Covid-19 pandemic. But beyond generosity and support, President Erdogan in return has asked Prime Minister Rama to take concrete steps to fight the Gulenists. According to him, this was a "precondition" for friendship and partnership between the two countries, a message he left to Rama during his visit to Tirana on January 17 this year. Erdogan demanded from the Albanian state that before his visit that he had planned before the end of the month of Ramadan, the "Gulenists" who take refuge in Albania and their business should be hit. During the visit to Albania, Erdogan reiterated twice the danger of Fethullah Gulen's organization for Albania. He said Turkey was hurt that its members were finding a place in Albania, and called for measures to be taken to avoid a repeat of a coup like the one in Turkey in 2015. However, this condition set by Erdogan did not is fulfilled by Rama. This has led to a breakdown in relations between the two leaders.

Rama showed Erdogan the "red lines"

Rama has given signals a few days after Erdogan's visit to Albania in January, that he will not hit the "Gulenists" who take refuge in Albania. The Prime Minister, Edi Rama during a statement for the media from the headquarters of the Socialist Party said that "we have no debt" to Erdogan and Turkey itself. "We have no debt to the President of Turkey and Turkey, as well as the President of Turkey and the Republic of Turkey they do not owe us anything because there is no debt between friends and between a brotherly friendship ", declared the Prime Minister Edi Rama. The clear red line that Prime Minister Rama showed for Erdogan has made the latter make the big turn towards the Albanian leader by totally abandoning him. Rama's change of attitude is suspected to have come after the Americans's attitude towards the Gulenists. US Deputy Chief of Mission in Albania, Demian Smith visited a few weeks ago the students of "Turgut Ozal" school, the educational institution, which Erdogan has asked year after year to close, as they are funded by Gülen. In his post on the official website of the American Embassy, ??the images of the group of Marines who accompanied the Deputy Ambassador in his meeting were also released. "Schoolchildren Turgut Ozal recently learned about the work of US diplomats and US Marines during a meeting with Deputy Chief of Mission Demian Smith and other officers from the US Embassy in Tirana," the US Embassy wrote on social media.
