Brussels supports justice reform and encourages SPAK to root out corruption in Albania, the EU ambassador meets the heads of justice and defends Altin Duman after the attacks of Ilir Meta and Sali Berisha

Brussels supports justice reform and encourages SPAK to root out corruption in

Brussels strongly supports judicial reform and encourages the Special Prosecutor's Office (SPAK) to root out corruption in Albania. In recent days, former president Ilir Meta, former prime minister Sali Berisha and their entourage are fiercely attacking the new judiciary and its leaders, especially the leader of SPAK, Altin Dumani. This offensive of attacks and accusations has brought the internationals into the game, who have defended the heads of justice and Altin Duman. Yesterday, the ambassador of the European Union in Tiraë, Silvio Gonzato, during a meeting for the EU project for Justice, emphasized that he supports the institutions of justice, stressing that their work is the key to eradicating corruption from the country. Diplomat Gonzato stated that integration into the European Union depends on the contribution of justice institutions and emphasized that the EU will stand by Albania's side to achieve this objective. "We fully support the new justice institutions and the 2016 justice reform, which enabled them to deliver justice to citizens. Their work is the key to eradicating corruption from Albania. In the steering committee of the #EU4Justice project, I emphasized that EU integration depends a lot on their contribution. Providing timely, effective and transparent justice is the key to restoring citizens' trust in institutions. The EU will stand by Albania's side in achieving this objective," EU ambassador Silvio Gonzato wrote yesterday in a post on social networks, while sharing details from the meeting.

Meta's attacks on Duman, the EU reacts: Unacceptable

Meanwhile, last week, the office of the European Union in Albania reacted on social networks after the attacks of former President Ilir Meta on the head of SPAK, Altin Dumani. The EU strongly condemns Meta's attacks on Altin Duman, calling them unacceptable and an attack on justice. In response, it is emphasized that the EU stands by Albanian magistrates and professionals engaged in the fight against corruption and organized crime. "Attacks or intimidation against members of the judiciary have no place in democracy. We support the High Prosecution Council's condemnation of the recent inadmissible public statements directed against SPAK. The European Union stands by Albanian magistrates and professionals engaged in the fight against corruption and organized crime," the EU's response reads.

Diplomat Silvio Gonzato: Duman to stay calm

On the other hand, earlier the EU ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, stated that SPAK is bringing results in the fight against corruption, so according to him, the prosecution should continue its work without pressure. "I think it is very important that the special institution that was created precisely to deal with cases of high-level corruption and organized crime is now bringing some results. I think it gives credibility to Albania's determination to fight corruption, because corruption is harmful to society, it is harmful to the economy, so if Albania wants to join the European Union, it is clear the path to follow. This should be one of Albania's priorities and should lead to concrete results. So, you know, I have faith in the Albanian justice system. I guess we just have to let it do its thing and see what it brings. See, the 2016 reform specifically aimed to ensure that the justice system is independent, self-governing and therefore resistant and resilient to political pressures. So I discussed these things with Mr. Duman and he is confident, he is doing his job and I think he should stay calm and carry on. Is there political pressure? It's not up to me to say, but he doesn't seem to be worried about it," declared the EU ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato.
