The head of the Special Structure Against Organized Crime and Corruption, Altin Dumani seems to have shocked and even caused anxiety in Albanian politics. Yesterday, he reported to the Prosecution Council on the work of SPAK, where he stated that in this prosecution there are a total of 712 corruption and organized crime files that are being investigated with nearly 602 people under investigation. According to him, 455 files have been carried over since 2021, while the rest are proceedings from 2022. "In total, we have 712 criminal proceedings, of which 455 have been carried over from 2021. In total, there are 602 people under investigation. While for 2022, we had 344 defendants. This figure has increased by 44 percent. For the year 2022, 100 defendants have been sent for trial. 48 cases were in the field of corruption", he declared. Further, the head of SPAK emphasized that there is a several-fold increase in corruption investigations, warning that this figure will increase even more. According to him, during the past year, it has been seen that money laundering cases have been increasing, while also during 2022, 12 new cases were registered, reported by foreign jurisdictions. "SPAK has demonstrated that money laundering cases are increasing. In 2022, we have 12 new cases, cases sourced from foreign jurisdictions. SPAK has paid special attention to criminal offenses in narcotics trafficking or terrorism. Cases related to corruption have increased by 30%. The prosecutors have also undergone some important trainings", he said. During his speech, Duman emphasized that in 2022, the structure of the National Bureau of Investigation was completed, after 32 more officers were recruited. "Regarding the recommendation to close the vacancies in SPAK, we underline that throughout the year 2022, the recruitment process of 32 BKH investigators has been completed, finalizing the completion of this structure and the appointment of 60 investigators at BHK", he said.

Dumani at the European Integration Council: SPAK is committed

Meanwhile, yesterday the head of SPAK, Altin Dumani, also spoke at the Council of European Integration, where he said that SPAK is dedicated, but it is only one institution, and for this the cooperation of all is required. "SPAK prosecutors exercise all their duties as far as criminal offenses are concerned. We are committed to fulfilling our legal obligations in accordance with the constitution and the law. SPAK is only one institution, it also needs others. Their cooperation is important to have the best possible results. In the Special Prosecutor's Office, we have a sanction that deals only with corruption. Any public entity is welcome to report. We have two provisions in our competence", underlined Dumani.

The fight against corruption, the EU calls SPAK

Jam i lumtur të shikoj kreun e SPAK-ut në këtë tryezë. Kjo duhet të sjellë një bilance të fortë, hetimesh, ndjekjesh penale, në çështje korrupsioni të nivelit të lartë, rikuperim të pasurive, sekuestrime, rikuperim të pasurive që vijnë nga vepra të lidhur ame korrupsionin. Tanimë na duhet të shohim çështje që vihen para drejtësisë. Kreu i ri i SPAK është rezultat i vullnetit të mirëfilltë politik për të ndryshuar gjërat, por pa e vënë në trysni kreun e ri të sapo zgjedhur, ky institucion do ketë vlera po aq sa kanë realizimet, kemi shpresa të mëdha për këtë institucion. Shpresojmë se do jetë aq i suksesshëm sa ka qenë procesi i vlerësimit”, deklaroi Varhelyi.
