The Prime Minister's three envelopes

The Prime Minister's three envelopes

It was the year 2003. I was working as a journalist in "Gazeta e Athina", which was published in Albanian language in Greece, when the director of one of the largest Greek newspapers "To Vima", Stavros Psiharis, published an article addressed to the Prime Minister of then, Kostas Simitis. The writing, which had the title: "Three letters of the prime minister", in short, talks about a prime minister who, when he takes office, finds three envelopes from his predecessor on his office desk. Each envelope had a number and the first envelope had the note above: "Open and read when you have difficulties that you cannot solve!". In the first difficulty, open the first envelope and read: "Blame the ancestor!" In the next difficulty after a while he opens the second envelope and reads: "Blame your ministers!". When faced with the next difficulty, he opens the third envelope and reads: "Prepare the three letters for your successor!". For all those who love and understand politics the story of the three envelopes is a great metaphor. Perhaps this has little to do with Albania, which has a pronounced lack of political culture, but I remember that article more and more every time I look at the political situation in Albania in recent years when the country has entered a long period deep introversion. I remember that article every time prime ministers have difficulties, how many times our political leaders fail to convince us. Because such is the fate of governments and politicians: To carry their responsibilities on their shoulders, but also those that are not theirs. But especially the sales made to our ideals! Anyway, I am convinced that in Albania there has been a period when a prime minister or a politician prepares letters, in which he lays the blame on his ancestors and subordinates, until he comes to the third card, when he will have to sit down and prepare the three cards for the successor. And this time has passed due to the fact that in these 32 years of transition, Albania and the politicians should have learned some lessons to become better, of course. Instead, every prime minister, every political leader, apart from the third letter envelope, has stubbornly opened only the first two envelopes: "It's always the fault of others!". Thus, the prime minister issues the "yellow card" to his ministers, ex-ministers, and mayors. He "cut off the heads" of his subordinates to save himself, without realizing that he first went bankrupt politically, then economically, socially, etc. The same with other political leaders, who do not even recognize their mistakes, but they ask the military of their parties to follow them blindly, without realizing that moments of big or small departures also come in life. The question is if or when the opening hour of the third letter will come: Will it be the next election or not? The answer is difficult to give right now, because the prime minister still has many weapons at his disposal, although the cost, crisis, scandals and crime usually in normal states bring down normal governments, while the rest of politics tries to find arguments, which are not arguments to crawl. On the other hand, the opposition makes the mistake of underestimating the prime minister, while with its policies it creates the impression that instead of overthrowing the government, it will be victorious over the rest of it... And when political opponents insult each other almost every day , how can they ask the society, the electorate, the responsible citizens to coexist harmoniously for the good of their country? It's hard to achieve... And Albania spins in a vicious circle without learning any lessons, but sharpening knives against each other... Because in Albania, apparently, there are too many young people, as long as they are sacrificed by sending them to emigration. Because apparently there are too many pensioners in Albania, as long as they are treated as citizens of the last category, with ridiculous pensions and poor health care. Because in Albania, it seems, Albanians overindulge while prices have reached the top, poverty is sitting cross-legged, rampant corruption is not being punished, properties are being robbed in broad daylight, education and health are on the ground... But nobody should overindulge in Albania , to sacrifice them on the altar of criminal incompetence, without having the opportunity to build a serious state. Apparently, even the "second letter" is not successful today in Albania. In other words, the ministers are to blame, or coincidences..., as wise people are no longer deceived by communication tricks, nor by the crocodile tears of our leaders. Citizens want deeds, work, not words, accusations on social networks or stands of party meetings. Citizens are not interested in the semi-principled "conflict" of political forces, nor the troubles of politicians, nor their "responsibilities" and barren promises. Citizens are tired and revolted by the ping-pong of accusations, since basically, at the end of everything, it turns out that there are no guilty parties; no one should be punished criminally or politically and life would go on as before, with the entire political caste happy. Because when today always blames yesterday, it is guilty in the meantime before tomorrow! And Albanian politics is already responsible for tomorrow and seems guilty for the future that is coming very soon. And the third letter is still far, far away from the horizon and the Albanian political culture!
