Tribute to the emblem of the Albanian greener, agronomist Tomson Nishani
Written by Dr. Sulejman Sula “Mjeshtër i Madh” 17 Maj 2022
"With great passion and high level of science, during the years of work, he is fully committed to the problems of Albanian greenery" Tomson Nishani is the most famous personality at home and abroad as the pride of greenery in Albania, distinguished in the perfection of production of seedlings, as an architect and landscape designer in the technique of composing decorative plants, as the author of 13 books with scientific content and as a connoisseur and user of four foreign languages. He raised the technique of greenery to a scientific level and ranked it alongside other branches of Albanian science. The world of flowers and other decorative plants is inseparable from the compiler of the theory and narrator of the practice of cultivating them, the well-known Thomson Nishani. He, as an agronomist by name and fame, passionate about decorative flora, has been praised as a professor by his friends, associates and lovers in Albania and abroad. He was born in the city of Gjirokastra on November 26, 1932. He started his education in his hometown where he lived for 12 years, then continued in Tirana with the arrival of family residence in 1944. During the years 1948-1952 he graduated from the agricultural high school in Kamza, Tirana and after completing compulsory military service, he continued his higher studies at the Faculty of Agronomy with excellent results. The lessons in the subject of Floriculture-Dendroflora were received by the forerunner of Albanian floriculture, professor Skënder Rusi, graduated in Perugia, Italy. Memories rejuvenate. Therefore, it is our duty to generalize and recall them with the good intention of learning and moving forward, one with the times, with the progressive and the whole social civilization. This should be done with greenery with flowers, plants and decorative wood, green grass coverings, water surfaces and the entirety of architectural works, etc. These and others bestow more smiles, love, bring delicacy and soften human souls, which is much needed in achieving the quality of life in peace and harmony. There are tens of specialists and hundreds of distinguished employees in the greenery of the Albanian space, but a special name, at the level of legend bears agronomist Tomson Nishani, who most clearly showed the passion, love, skills, perseverance and dedication in introducing and consolidating of the culture of greenery, within the culture of civilization of the Albanian society. As such, he is the yesterday of the history of greenery and with the example of the stories given by him, remains the model for today and a source of inspiration for the future of Albanian greenery. Thomson began his professional life and career as a greengrocer in 1958, with employment in the newly created utility system in the Great Park of Tirana. With full of passion, energy and knowledge, he devoted himself to the application of contemporary greenery, gaining a good voice for deep knowledge in Floriculture. Dedicated to the fulfillment of tasks, with civic culture, good behavior and scientific knowledge he was put in charge of the Nursery of the decorative flora of Tirana, which he soon managed to turn into a model for the whole country and a base for the supply of plants in some districts. Here, the management and professional skills confirmed in the restructuring, mapping and grouping of vegetation types stood out even more strongly, optimal stringing of plant propagation, introduction of new ways of plant propagation, etc. With the concern and attention of the researcher, he identified the rare plant flora of Tirana, where he specified the special plants, some of which received the designation of the plant as a natural monument. With these innovations, he managed to turn the nursery with the relevant greenhouse into a real didactic school, where experimentation was done on a scientific basis and served as an auditorium for specialists and pedagogues of several fields. Successful realization of all tasks and with unprecedented level did its own thing, increasing its values ??as a leader and specialist vanguard. Hungarian agronomist Edith Mohasci (Steel), a graduate of the University of Budapest with a degree in cultivation, also brought great experience. As an expert, he established on a scientific basis the flower nursery with greenhouses in Braka. He laid the foundation for the advanced floriculture of Tirana. In co-authorship with his colleague Thomson Nishani, they published in 1965 the book "Flowers and their cultivation". Large Park with an area of ??360 ha. and Artificial Lake with an area of ??up to 48 ha. are valued as the lungs of the city, and as the ecological pride created by man for the people. As a work of special importance and role, the work for maintenance, the most modern improvements and the performance of multidimensional and year-round functions, required as much dedication and knowledge as possible, as it also dealt with foreign visitors and experts. It required professional erudition in the knowledge of greenery, botanist and environmentalist, application in accordance with the advanced levels of European greenery, knowledge, taste and architectural finesse, in genuine engineering applications, hydrotechnical, electrical, combination with artistic requirements for works of art, as well as knowledge of zoologist, athlete, historian and even the guide, etc. These qualities and sensations better than others were found in agronomist Thomson, who was favored by the experience gained, continuous study, qualifications at home and abroad, insistence on introducing new scientific achievements, as well as knowledge and use of the French language, German, Italian and Russian, which distinguished him as a complex figure and made him a unique case. The knowledgeable and hard-working man was required by the job. The nomenclature brought him back with titular work in the Great Park, where he stayed for 20 years, longer than anywhere in the greenery career. With knowledge and work he managed to harmonize the functioning of a number of facilities such as the two nurseries, the greenery of the horn park neighborhood, the Sonatorium, facilities at the Artificial Lake, Martyrs' Cemetery, Zoo, Student City, Summer Theater, etc. Everywhere became the best possible in creating the green and urban landscape. He managed to complete the mosaic of autochthonous Albanian vegetation and to introduce and confront new and exotic plants in that relaxing and entertaining environment turned into a city for local and foreign visitors. The park became a true reflection of the human hand in creating the mosaic of vegetation and other objects, which gave life and admirable liveliness to the capital, for which appreciation grades have been received by foreigners and various experts. This became possible and thanks to Thomson, who spared no effort to pour out the energies of the working man, the demands of the citizen, the thirst of the specialist and the most advanced level of the ideator, designer and scientific implementer. He made the most useful and the most possible for society. This made him a prominent environmental, ecological, scientific and social activist with high patriotic values. Agronomist Thomson, as a missionary to spread knowledge in the places where he worked, turned the school of mass learning about greenery. Most obviously, he has revealed his technical-scientific skills in the content of 13 published books as well as a series of manuscripts in Albanian and foreign languages. In the school of municipal economics, as an effective leader of the branch of greenery-flowers, he was distinguished in giving lectures to specialize in Flora-Dendroflora, leader and employee with secondary education from all over the country. Since the curricula, setting up the garden with decorative plants, compiling four textbooks, equipping with gardening tools, setting up the xylotheca, were done by pedagogue Thomson, giving contemporary knowledge to the whole country. The consultancy, expertise and scientific advice provided by Thomson, have been present in issues and decision-making in the Scientific Council, the Green Enterprise, the Association of Decorative Flora of Albania, the Municipality of Tirana, in digaster and with foreign trade for the export of mimosa flowers. Frequent kept in touch and cooperation with the greens of the districts to which he was found as an expert or invited with concrete advice and solutions and in some cases accompanied by help with local or foreign planting material provided or propagated in the nurseries and greenhouses of Tirana. . Thomson became the Olympian of the Albanian greenery, but first of all a simple man and citizen, smiling, generous, tolerant and communicative. He did not place himself above his colleagues and collaborators. Excellent communication with mutual respect and understanding the real gentleman outlined his life without creating problems, resentment, envy, ambition or gaps. This remained the creed of his mind, heart and word with friends and co-workers, subordinates and superiors. This nobility was nurtured by flowers, which he knew their symbolism and valued as poetry, as music, as pleasure and fun. In Thomson you find harmoniously reflected the image of the artist, the mind of the scientist, the spirit of the humanist and the oratory of the tour guide. He valued nurseries and greenhouses as laboratories for scientific research, while gardens, parks and any other green environment as a field of work in the art of creativity to design and approach an environment where the beauty, colors, aroma and purchase of Albanian nature are expressed for citizens. of the country. On his 75th birthday, in 2007, with a pure, expressive and literary language, with an abundance of testimonies, activities, experiences, facts, events and the dedication of dozens of characters, he donated to the greens and flower lovers, the unique book on the true history of greenery, e entitled "The Good People of Flowers". The book, as a current encyclopedia of greenery, brings a lot of valuable treatments to be known and evoke, reflect and evaluate in detail the life and beneficial activity of many distinguished colleagues, collaborators, masters and amateurs in urban and personal greenery, without removing the leaders with a tendency and given to greening at the level of enterprises, municipalities, digasters and cooperative institutions. He values ??gardening as a special public asset, for which he spared no effort to propagate and publish in columns, on radio and television, in scientific films, in print publications of hundreds of articles at home and abroad, interviews, consultations, exhibitions and in uninterrupted meetings in schools, work centers, neighborhoods. housing, etc. All this to sensitize and raise awareness of citizens in order to coexist in symbiosis with greenery, as a need and indicator of increasing the degree of civilization. Thomson in 1998 tried to emigrate to Italy, where he lived for 17 years in the city of Florence. He lived an active life, meeting and beating opinions with personalities of the municipality, of the National Central Library of Florence, where there was a file of hundreds of books in the Albanian language. He met and exchanged knowledge with many prominent specialists in the field, who considered him a knowledgeable and honored friend, calling Professor Tomi, Maestro Tomi and publishing articles about him in the Italian press. He met, talked and shared his knowledge with the director of the Boboli Garden in Florence, Mrs. Litta Maria Medri, with the Italian nursery expert Mr. Casero Miro Mati, with the journalist of "La Nazionale" Mrs. Lucia Agati, with the director of the Institute "Oltre Mare" in Florence Mrs. Alice, with Professor Carlo Vezzofi; rector at the University of Pistoia, with professors and students as well as the head of the Pro-Loco association Mr. Nicola Ëittum in collaboration with Professor Alessandro Botaçi in Saltino, etc. The Italian newspaper "La Nazione" dated 26.10.2007 writes that: "Professor Nishani is one of the greatest experts in Albanian horticulture". As head of the Albanian Decorative Flora Association and Deputy. President of Floristic Associations of the Balkan countries, He has participated and been interviewed at the World Euroflora in Genoa, at the large Recu Foundation in Budapest, in Macedonia and several other countries, in activities such as exhibitions, fairs, etc., where he has witnessed and confessed the values ??of Albanian greenery. As an interconnector, he headed an Italian delegation and mediated the cooperation of the Green Enterprise with the Tuscany Nursery. From Postoia-Tuscany were taken selected, grown and standard seedlings with which the greenery was made in the main streets and corners of the capital. Has mediated and brought literature in foreign languages ??and from time to time and rare ornamental plants. I got to know his human, professional and scientific life closely in the years when I headed the green cleaning section in the Municipality of Tirana. I had a friend, collaborator and chief consultant on all green issues. From him everyone had something to gain. I knew him, approached him, cooperated and benefited for the benefit of the work, without ever being disappointed. He invited me and I participated in the promotion of the book "Good people of flowers", which he signed and donated to me, where he dedicated page 258 of the book, appreciating me as head of section and agrarian expert in the Municipality of Tirana, as a supporter great for buying the capital. On February 13, 2015, he passed away and was buried in a foreign land, followed with pain and reverence by Albanians living in Italy and kind friends from the country. He deserved the honors of a great Albanian, with homage and accompanied to his homeland by a friend, numerous friends and colleagues and covered with various flowers without missing and the symbolism of the season, Mimoza flowers. His life dedicated to cultivation and greenery, appeals to all Albanians to become even more aware in growing and maintaining the optimal rate of greenery with 10-15 m2 per inhabitant, as a vital environmental and decorative condition to ensure the quality of life. The most significant evidence of this truth is brought by antiquity, which has valued the gardens of Babylon as one of the 7 wonders of the world. As for many other personalities, even for this legend who made an era with special contributions for the benefit of the country, he should be given the deserved honors with decoration, street or object name and bust placement. appeals to all Albanians to become even more aware in increasing and maintaining the optimal rate of greenery with 10-15 m2 per inhabitant, as a vital environmental and decorative condition to ensure quality of life.
