How much are we at risk from lightning in the car?

Bad weather is often accompanied by lightning. But how much danger are we in if we get caught in such a storm in the car?

The car acts as a safety cage, and allows us to feel safe inside it.

Although most people think it's because of the tires, the protection comes from the car's body and roof, which channels the potential lightning strike outside, leaving the occupants unharmed.

According to the laws of physics, electricity takes the path of least resistance.

For lightning strikes this means the current will flow around the vehicle instead of through it.

In addition, the windshield and window panes act as insulators, providing an additional layer of protection.

However, it is vital to note that this protection is reduced if you have a window open.

Leaving a window open increases the risk of lightning striking the vehicle, potentially damaging electronic systems or shorting circuits that could deploy air bags.

In the above conditions, convertibles or those without metal roofs do not offer equivalent protection, or at least that offered by closed models.

But what should we do if we get caught in an electrical storm in the car?

If you are in a car without a metal roof, seek shelter in a strong building or structure.

Avoid parking under trees or near transformers, which can make the situation worse.

Pull over to the side of the road, turn on the hazard lights and turn off the engine. Make sure all windows are closed.

Avoid touching metal or electrical parts, including your mobile phone.

Do not touch the radio, pedals, door handles or steering wheel. After the storm has passed, you can safely exit the vehicle.

Avoid using or talking on the phone, even if it is not connected to the car.

If your car is struck by lightning, it's generally safe to get out after the power goes out.

If the storm continues, wait until it ends, as lightning can strike the same place several times.
