A new UK scientific study shows that people who go to bed early, especially between 10pm and 11pm, have a lower risk of heart disease and heart attack or stroke than those who they go to bed late or before 22:00 at night.

While there have been several studies on the relationship between sleep duration and cardiovascular health, the relationship between sleep onset time and heart health has been less well studied. In the work published in the European Heart Journal, Digital Health of the European Society of Cardiology, researchers, led by David Planes from the University of Exeter, analyzed data from 88,026 people with an average age of 61 years (43-79 years).

Sleep habits were recorded for one week with a special device worn on the participant's arm, and participants were also asked to complete questionnaires on demographic, medical and lifestyle data. They were then monitored for possible diagnoses of myocardial infarction, heart failure, chronic ischemic disease, and stroke.

Over the next six years, 3.6% of people developed such a problem. The probability was highest for those who slept after midnight and lowest for those who slept between 10 and 11 pm.

Compared to those who went to bed between 10 and 11 p.m., those who went to bed after midnight had an average 25% higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Those who went to bed between 11 and 12 pm compared to those who went to bed before 10 pm had a 12% higher risk. This risk is generally higher for women than for men, and women seem to benefit more from sleeping between 10 and 11 pm.
