How much time should you spend in bed? Do you need 6 hours of sleep, 7, 8 or 10? The permanent recommendation regarding this issue is getting 8 hours of sleep every night. This way you will be able to relax and protect your brain and body.

But according to experts this is not said to be true for everyone. The sleep cycle is closely dependent on your genes and there are several ways you can find out which "sleep" group you belong to.

How many hours should you sleep?

The recommendations for sleep are the same as those for water consumption. It's healthy what makes you feel better. No one can know for sure if there is a single recommendation on these issues or several. And while most experts recommend 8-9 hours of sleep each night, others say otherwise.

According to therapist Annie Miller, sleep cycles in humans have changed over different historical periods to adapt to lifestyle. The 8-hour standard is not valid for everyone, as some people may be fed up with even 5-6 hours of sleep.

In 2019 scientists also managed to discover a special gene related to this. It is called the "insomnia gene" and people who carry it need only 6.5 hours a night without any negative side effects. This finding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a small test on this issue, but it proves the theory that not all people need the same amount of sleep.

Can the opposite happen?

On the other hand, experts have not identified any genes responsible for persistent drowsiness. According to therapists and psychologists, sleep depends heavily on the genetics of each of us. So it is no wonder that you can have a personalized sleep system that suits only you and not the highly recommended 8-hour schedule.
