The journey of the work "When they don't go to the stadium" by Guri Madhi in Dortmund alongside the painters Picasso, Salvador Dali and other world authors

The journey of the work "When they don't go to the stadium" by

"When they don't go to the stadium" the work of the famous painter Guri Madhi from 1986 will be exhibited alongside the works of world authors. The Albanian painter Guri Madhi with his painting will be among the 100 best in the exhibition at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. The modern trend of recent years is also digital exhibitions, and such is the one that will be opened to the public in Dortmund. Guri Madhi's work will be exhibited alongside Picasso, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Rene Magritte, Paul Klee, Bansky, Alexander Deyneka, etc. Pandi Madhi, the painter's son, considers this as an achievement for Albanian art as well. "This presentation is an achievement for the author, but it is also an achievement for Albanian art. Albania is represented in this exhibition by Guri Madhi. But this selection of Guri Madhi was made in January 2023. Good luck that the National Football Team is in the European Championship. "An invisible hand brought them together to be there and represent Albania, since the exhibition is UEFA's in Germany for the European Championship," says Pandi Madhi. In the German Football Museum in Dortmund, on an area of ??1000 square meters, 175 works of art on the subject of football, by 100 authors, will be exhibited, among which the work of 1986 "When they don't go to the stadium" (in English " Watching Football Game") by the Albanian painter Guri Madhi (1921-1988). The opening ceremony of the exhibition "In motion- art & football" will be on May 27 and will be open to the public until January 6, 2025. On pages 224 and 225 of the catalog of this exhibition, with the title "In motion" and author Manuel Neukirchner (director of the museum) presented the work of Guri Madhi, which is part of the exhibition, accompanied by its analysis and the biography of the artist.

The route of the work

Pandi Madhi, the painter's son, tells the journey of how the work "When they don't go to the stadium" that is part of the family fund became part of this exhibition that presents the outstanding artist Guri Madhi among the 100 best. According to him, this work, which was realized in 1986, its dimensions are 86 cm x 123 cm in oil colors on canvas. According to him, the reason for painting in fajazit is related to the fact that in those years there was a great shortage of materials for painting. "Artists were given them in a rationed manner. Artists (and Guri Madhi) could receive up to 2 m of canvas per year. Therefore, painters were forced to find alternatives of other materials to work with. In June 1987, the painter Guri Madhi opened a personal exhibition in the Palace of Culture in Tirana, with works realized in the years 1983-1987. The exhibition was opened after passing many filters of commissions, because it was judged that these works had nothing to do with socialist realism. Previously, the State Commission removed from the exhibition some of the works that the painter had presented. "When they don't go to the stadium" also suffered this fate, which was considered literary. On June 13, 1988, Guri Madhi passed away unexpectedly. His plans were to open a personal exhibition in his hometown, precisely in the Gallery of Korça", he says. But his wish was fulfilled by his brothers and sons. The son of the painter Pandi Madhi says that on September 30, 1988 the exhibition was opened in the gallery of the city of Korça. "There was no commission filter. All the works that were taken from Tirana to Korça were exhibited. "When we don't go to the stadium" was exhibited here for the first time, as well as the abstract painting called "Painter's Concern" made in May 1988. The second exhibition of "When we don't go to the stadium" was held in an exhibition on Albanian art in October 2018 at the residence of the Italian Embassy in Tirana, curated by the artist Artan Shabani. In July 2020, an exhibition entitled "Constructing a dream" was opened at the Pera Museum in Istanbul, with the curator and artist Artan Shabani. The exhibition was visited during 5 months by 55 thousand visitors (regardless of Covid-19). This was the third time of its exhibition", says Pandi Madhi, the painter's son, where exactly from the exhibition in the Pera museum, the communications to present it in Dortmund started. The painter Guri Madhi (Korçe, May 15, 1921 - Budapest, June 1988) was one of the founders of the University of Arts. With over 400 works in 33 years of creativity, Guri Madhi "People's Painter" was one of the greatest Albanian painters.
