The "Albania" mosaic in the National Historical Museum is restored, almost 1 million euros for the project works financed by the European Union

The "Albania" mosaic at the National History Museum previously underwent a restoration process, a job that continued for months. A work that presented problems for years and was left without intervention, where from time to time the authors have expressed that it had to be saved. This restoration was made possible thanks to the "EU4Culture" program, financed by the European Union and implemented by UNOPS in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, where the inauguration ceremony of the restored mosaic took place last night. The facade mosaic of the National Historical Museum was inaugurated in November 1981. The work was created by well-known artists of the time such as Vilson Kilica, Josif Droboniku, Agim Nebiu, Anastas Kostandini and Aleksandër Filipi. The "EU4Culture" program states on its social media page that it worked for 22 months with the mosaic restoration project. "The restorers divided the mosaic into segments and worked on each damaged segment in a workshop adapted to the museum, replacing, in the affected areas, the rusted irons and pieces with new ones. Over the course of 22 months, they carefully cleaned and varnished the entire surface of the mosaic. The total budget of the works reached almost one million euros (based on the current exchange rate)", says "EU4Culture". The creators of the mosaic assisted the EU4Culture team in ordering and purchasing the tesserae from the factory based in Venice, Italy, which originally produced them 40 years ago. According to "EU4Culture" this was no easy task, as the experts had to consider a number of complexities, such as finding minerals, the influence of external temperatures, external humidity levels, thermal fluctuations in production days and nights and many other factors. "Unfortunately, some of the minerals used to make the original tesserae were no longer available, and chemists and technologists had to do more to identify and create materials that exactly matched the original color tones," the materials said.

Creation of the workshop

Në maj të vitit 2021, “EU4Culture” shprehet se krijoi atelienë, që do t’i shërbente procesit të restaurimit duke formuar një ekip ekspertësh multidisiplinor të përbërë nga inxhinierë, teknologë, specialistë të konservimit, restaurator dhe artistë që punuan për mozaikun në vitet 1980. “Pas diskutimeve të shumta dhe në konsultim me disa nga autorët, ekipi përcaktoi qasjen më të përshtatshme për restaurimin me fokus ruajtjen e elementeve origjinalë, duke marrë në konsideratë teknikat dhe materialet origjinale të përdorura si dhe zhvillimet moderne të teknologjisë në konservim dhe restaurim”, thuhet për punën. “EU4Culture” bën me dije se ekipi u përball me sfidën e madhe të ruajtjes së sipërfaqes së mozaikut prej 565 m2, një hapësirë më e madhe se përmasat e një fushe basketbolli. “Për ta arritur këtë, konservatorëve iu desh të dokumentonin me kujdes mozaikun gur pas guri me dorë, duke përdorur një rrjetë plastike dhe letër kalku. Kjo përfshinte analizimin dhe regjistrimin e 123 toneve të ndryshme të ngjyrave dhe qindra mijëra gurëve individualë (tesserae) në një shkallë 1:1”, shprehet “EU4Culture”. Gjatë riparimit, sipas “EU4Culture” u zbulua se shtresat e çatisë të shtuara përgjatë viteve ishin pesë herë më të trasha se sa ishte parashikuar gjatë fazës së projektimit. Si pasojë, u hoqën më shumë se 437 tonë mbeturina dhe çatia u hidroizolua e u nivelua për të shmangur kontaktin e mozaikut me ujin e shiut. Mozaiku “Shqipëria” është më i madhi i këtij lloji në Shqipëri.
