Oltsen Gripshi: Criticism in art is not everyone's desire to write a few lines of personal thoughts, it is a well-organized science according to some rules

Written by Julia Vrapi 11 Mars 2023

Criticism in art is essential for the development of artistic quality, but today we find little of it. From time to time various artists or researchers have expressed the importance of criticism, but the problem according to them is that in Albania little is done for its development even by our institutions. Historian and art critic Oltsen Gripshi says that criticism in the field of art places the artist in another stage. "Criticism in the field of arts is essential for the constant development of artistic quality. Criticism belongs to theory and as such investigates the artistic work in terms of content, aesthetics (philosophical), stylistics, history and anthropology. In this process, criticism highlights not only the artistic values, but places the work and therefore the artist himself in another stage, in that of temporal belonging, codifying it as part of a period". says Ph.D. Gripshi in his reaction to criticism in the field of art. We don't find enough criticism in the field of arts today, but for art historian and critic Oltsen Gripshi, not everyone who wants to write personal impressions and thoughts can be called an art critic. He states that criticism in art is done according to certain rules and criteria. "Criticism is not what is perhaps commonly perceived (as insult, denigration, or devaluation of the artistic work), on the contrary, it serves and its only purpose is to highlight the stylistic language with it in the whirlwind of the storm of thoughts, approaches and impressions which work seeks to communicate, distancing myself from the rhetoric and jargon of mass to judge a work and place it where it deserves to be scientifically. Criticism is not everyone's desire to express and write a series of personal impressions and thoughts. It is a well-defined and well-organized science, according to some rules and fundamental criteria in its shaping", says Gripshi.
A course in art criticism
For art historian Oltsen Gripshi, criticism in the field of art exists. But according to him, there is a problem in the country today, that there is a lack of a course in the school for the formation of critics in the field of art. "Criticism has existed for several years now in Albania, since I am one of them, which is what I studied for and this is precisely the "Achilles' heel", that in Albania there is a lack of a university course/branch dedicated entirely to art criticism , because even those who give it sporadically in different universities, not all of them have studied art criticism. In this field, criticism in Albania is sometimes absent, sometimes weak and sometimes achieved, which leads to the perception that it is missing!", says Ph.D. in his reaction. grip Oltsen Gripshi is a contemporary art artist, essayist, esthete, curator, historian and Albanian art critic. In 2006 he graduated from the GB Cignaroli Academy of Fine Arts in Verona, Italy. He is further educated in the professional and academic field. He is the winner of a number of international awards. His philosophical-artistic approach is that of the surreal-conceptual language, concretizing it with different mediums such as: painting on canvas, video art, installation and photography.
