The International Day of Museums brings attention back to the importance of these institutions

Written by SOT.COM.AL 17 Maj 2023

Museums are key contributors to the well-being and sustainable development of our communities. Berat National Center of Museums on the eve of the International Day of Museums, which is marked every year on May 18, has published a material, according to which as trusted institutions and important threads in our common social structure, they are uniquely placed to create and promote positive change. "There are many ways in which museums can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: from supporting climate action and fostering inclusion, to tackling social isolation and improving mental health. As noted in the ICOM Resolution "On Sustainability and Implementation of the 2030 Agenda, Transforming Our World" (Kyoto, 2019), all museums have a role to play in shaping and creating a sustainable future, and they can do this through educational programs, exhibitions, community outreach and research," says the KKMB. The Berat National Center of Museums states that every year since 2020, the International Day of Museums supports a number of goals from the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. In 2023, the focus is on: Goal 1: Global health and well-being: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, particularly in relation to mental health and social exclusion; Goal 2: Climate Action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, adopting low-carbon practices in the Global North and mitigation strategies in the Global South; Goal 3: Life on Earth: Protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, amplifying the voices of indigenous leaders and raising awareness of biodiversity loss. KKMB invites visitors to visit the "Onufri" iconography museum tomorrow, where admission is free.
