Abaz Hado: The success of the first International Graphics Biennale at GAT led us to the development of the International Women's Art Festival "Frida"
Written by SOT.COM.AL 23 Nëntor 2023
International activities are important for visual art, where they are also held in the Tirana Art Gallery. Dr. Abaz Hado "Great Master" is a painter, graphic artist, researcher, art manager and who founded the Tirana Art Gallery that opened in November 2021. For the newspaper "TODAY" dr. Abaz Hado talks about the activities of visual art and their importance in the artistic life in the country, where in this first interview after withdrawing from the direction of GAT, the well-known artist also reveals his new projects in the field of art. Dr. Abaz Hado as the curator of the International Women's Art Festival "Frida" says that he is holding the first edition at GAT, as an important event to exclusively present and promote the art of women artists. According to him, the success of the first International Biennale of Graphics that was previously held at GAT led to the development of the "Frida" International Women's Art Festival. Dr. Hado says that the works of 150 women artists from 38 countries of the world have been presented in this festival.
- The International Women's Art Festival "Frida" holds its first edition at the Tirana Art Gallery. The festival opened on October 25, as one of the important activities of artistic life in our country. You founded this festival, what can you tell us more about its development at GAT?
Putting aside the modesty with the experience I have in the field of art and the management of institutions, of course I have always been in the idea of ??bringing as many international confrontational activities for visual art as possible, which are schools and directions that help Albanian art in general in general terms. While in the small aspect they are specific, for example the International Biennale of Graphics, which took place before in the GAT that came out successfully, and of course they are activities that have brought the revival of these genres. We thought about the impact that graphics have, being a participant in nearly 50 international graphics activities, we have the opportunity to show that we, like the rest of the world, can organize important activities. And we chose this, of course, in the Tirana Art Gallery, which was a new gallery. It is indeed a local gallery, but it has the dimension and vision of a large gallery, like a gallery that is a competitor. The success of that biennial earlier led us to another organization, which I had in my sights to do an activity for women. There are not many activities for women, but there is a kind of activation of the element of women's art, so this helps women's art to be more evident. I thought that women's art in Albania also had this problem, it was not very evident, but through sporadic activities. We decided to make a biennale called "Frida", for the reason that Frida Kahlo represents the model of the invincible woman, not only talented, who successfully coped with everything in her life and showed that she is an artist with dimensions big. In this case, we didn't have Frida for a big name, but for symbolism, Frida is all those women, girls, young talents who work, and that's what we intended. We were not wrong with the work we did, because it brought the result. We had 150 artists from 38 countries in the world, including Albania.
-In the works that were exhibited at the International Women's Art Festival "Frida" at GAT, we discern a sense of conscience, a desire for beauty, fragility, humanity, etc. As a curator, what can you tell us?
These types of exhibitions have a theme and when we called it "Frida" we assumed a large space for women. The spiritual, emotional, inspiring space and the space of their resistance to the serious social problems that the world is currently going through. We see there mothers, we also see creators, we see small children being persecuted and this was part of that. What was brought about in terms of these works represented by these artists, made it possible for different schools, different countries to bring these kinds of social, economic, etc. problems of women's relationship with the world, power, with everything.
-The festival opened this year in GAT, but how will it continue in other editions?
I have resigned, I have withdrawn from the direction of GAT, because I have focused on something more important. I set up that institution, which is GAT, as an institution of the Municipality of Tirana, where within two years it gained absolute authority. I was and am of the opinion that Albania needs active, dynamic, educational institutions for the public, which means services for the public. GAT in the absence of a National Art Gallery, of other spaces, where the exhibition hall in the National History Museum was closed, we were the only ones who could withstand all the pressure of requests to open exhibitions, but we also have an elite institution that is COD. In this case, the mayor was keen for the Tirana Art Gallery to be a space that would stimulate young artists mainly and of course other spaces so that artistic creativity would not be lacking. In this case, the director who is in GAT has her own platform. If it means to cooperate, we will cooperate. But I want to emphasize that the Tirana Art Gallery (GAT) currently has over 350 donated works, where 240 works are by foreign artists. The International Biennial of Graphics in GAT donated 240 works of art to Albania, but what will the fund have and what will they donate now to the "Frida" biennial.
