Actress, screenwriter and director Kay Mellor has passed away at the age of 71.

A spokeswoman for her television production company, Rollem Productions, confirmed "with deep sadness" that she passed away this Sunday.

She was known for creating and writing the series Fat Friends, which also marked the start of James Corden's career.

A Rollem Productions spokesman said:

"We are deeply saddened to announce the untimely and sudden death of our dear friend, mentor and colleague Kay Mellor on Sunday, May 15, 2022. We have lost a phenomenal talent. We urge you to respect the privacy of your family and friends at this time. ”

Mellor began her career writing dramas while she was the author of the acclaimed children’s drama, Children’s Ward. The popular series, Fat Friends aired in 2000-2005 and James Corden his first major acting role. The latter writes on Instagram that she has changed her life and that she will miss him very much.
"Unfortunately, Kay Mellor passed away today. She was the most generous, kind and loving person. An extremely talented writer. It changed my life when I joined Fat Friends on ITV. She saw something in me that no one had seen She gave many people their first chances. I have the most beautiful memories when I was filming with him. It will be missed by many people.
