Skopje sends strong message, Appeal puts former special prosecutor in cell, Katica Janeva sentenced to 7 years in prison

Skopje sends strong message, Appeal puts former special prosecutor in cell,

The Skopje Court of Appeals upheld the sentence of 7 years in prison for former Chief Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva and 9 years in prison for Bojan Jovanovski, known as Boki 13, the informal owner of 1TV. According to "REL", their sentences are related to the affair known as "Reket". Janeva and Jovanovski have been found guilty of taking a 1.5m-euro bribe from businessman Orce Kamchev to provide him with relief in a lawsuit against him. The indictment charged Jovanovski with "receiving a reward for illegal influence and money laundering" and Janeva with "abuse of office, position and authority as a special public prosecutor". Both are currently under house arrest, but now that the decision has become final, they will have to go to jail. They can appeal to the Supreme Court, but, by law, this will not be able to avoid going to jail immediately. The former Chief Special Prosecutor, Janeva, was arrested on August 21, 2019, after evidence emerged in the public about her involvement in the affair known as "Raketi". She was appointed head of the Special Prosecution Office shortly after its establishment in 2015. This prosecution office was established to investigate the wiretapping affair, which was uncovered by Social Democratic League leader Zoran Zaev in 2013.

Janeva has been accused of taking a 50,000-euro bribe plus a ransom in furniture worth another 5,000 euros from businessman Orce Kamcev in order to ease his legal situation. The first accused in this case, the businessman returned by showman Bojan Jovanovski, aka Boki 13, is also accused of taking bribes, as well as money laundering. The third defendant, Jovanovski's partner, Zoran Milevski, is accused of taking bribes. Jovanovski used his influence with Janeva during the period November 2018 to April 2019, when she was the head of the Special Prosecution Office, SJO, to release Kamchev from custody and regain his passport. Kamcev was in custody at the time as a suspect in an investigation codenamed "Empire", instigated by Janeva's own office, the Special Prosecution. Milevski had arranged contacts between Jovanovski and Kamchev's wife, and later with Kamchev himself, assuring them of Jovanovski's influence with Janeva. The charges further allege that Kamcev's wife paid the first half of the euro, after which Janeva proposed that Kamcev be transferred to house arrest - which the court later accepted. When the second tranche of money arrived, for another 1m euros, Janeva agreed to temporarily return Kamchev's passport. On this occasion, the prosecution states that Janeva received 50,000 euros for herself, plus furniture costing around 5,000 euros. The rest of the money, 1.5m euros, went to Jovanovski and Milevski. The charges further allege that Jovanovski may have used some of the money he earned through the crime to buy luxury goods and services. and later with Kamchev himself, assuring them of Jovanovski's influence with Geneva.
