A type of red wine can stop skin aging, experts say. A new study has shown that a specific and unusual type of red wine makes skin look younger.
Researchers from the University of Florida found that women who drank two glasses of non-alcoholic musk wine a day had more elasticity and water retention in their skin than those who consumed a placebo. The findings of the study were presented this Monday in Boston at the annual meeting of the American Association for Nutrition "Nutrition 2023".
Muscat wine is made from the Muscat grape, a hardy, thick-skinned grape native to North America.
Loss of elasticity causes the skin to sag during the aging process, while water retention helps create a barrier against damage. The aforementioned study is the first to determine how wine consumption may affect skin health in a randomized clinical trial.
Scientists chose 17 women between the ages of 40 and 67 and randomly assigned them to drink two glasses a day of still wine or a placebo drink that looked and tasted similar.
The muscat grape is native to Southeast America and is commonly used to make wine, although it is often called a "superfruit" because of its high levels of polyphenols, including anthocyanins, quercetin and ellagic acid, which can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress.
