WHO provides important information, shows two new drugs that treat coronavirus

The World Health Organization on Friday recommended two new drugs "baricitinib" and "sotrovimab" for the treatment of COVID-19.

The WHO said that baricitinib is recommended for patients with severe cases of COVID-19, while sotrovimab, an antibody drug, is recommended for mild or moderate cases in high-risk patients to be admitted to hospital.

"How many lives these drugs will save depends on how available and affordable they will be," the WHO said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Sweden, Magdalena Andersson has tested positive for COVID. A spokeswoman for Ms Andersson said she would work from home. Sweden, like many other countries in the world is facing a rapid spread of the highly transmissible Omicron variant.

Johns Hopkins University reported Friday that it has recorded 320.5 million global COVID infections and over 5 million deaths. The center said 9.5 billion vaccines have been administered.
