Slap Emmanuel Macron, court sentences 28-year-old Frenchman to prison

A French court has sentenced 28-year-old Damien Tarel to four months in prison for slapping French President Emmanuel Macron.

The incident happened during Macron's visit to the southeastern region of Drome, while the 28-year-old told judges that his action was not premeditated.

Tarel was charged with "assault on a public official", a criminal offense punishable by a maximum of 3 years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros, but the court decided to sentence the young man to only 4 months in prison.

Tarel's attack on Macron shocked France and was condemned by all political parties. Macron later described it as an isolated incident and said violence and hatred were a threat to democracy.
