French sociologist and historian Alain Touraine has died at the age of 97.
Alain Turenne was the founder and research director of the Center for Sociological Analysis and Intervention at the Ecole Supérieur d'Etudes Sociales de Paris and the author of numerous books.
He was an important figure in the establishment of French sociology of labor after the Second World War. He studied labor and social movements in Latin American countries and Poland (“Solidarity” or “Solidarnosc”, in the 80s). His work in Poland led him to develop the research method of "sociological intervention", which he develops in his book "La voix et le regard" ("The voice and the gaze").
Internationally, he was one of the well-known sociologists of social movements, especially of May '68 in France. At the time he was professor of sociology at Nanterre. Seeing the situation, he wrote one of the first studies. The year 1968 marked the transition from work and the working class to social movements.
He was born in 1925 in Hermanville-sur-Mer. As director of studies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), in Paris, he created the Center for the Study of Social Movements (Centre d'etude des mouvements sociaux) and was the first to introduce the concept of a "post-industrial society" ".
He was a member of the European Academy, the Polish Academy of Sciences and an honorary doctor of the Universities of Louvain, Geneva, Montreal, Bologna, Mexico, Peru, etc.
