He killed 8 innocent people/ The perpetrator appears in court without any sign

A supporter of the Islamic State militant group has been sentenced to several life terms by a court in New York.

Sayfullo Saipov killed eight people after plowing his truck into pedestrians and cyclists on Manhattan streets in 2017.

He was sentenced to ten life terms, plus 260 years, and will never be released from prison.

During the sentencing, the jury said that he has "destroyed many lives". Saipov showed no remorse during the trial.

Saipov faced the victims' families and survivors in court, and the judge noted that the defendant was "absolutely unrepentant."
Saipov, an Uzbek national, 35, used a rented truck to carry out the attack in New York in 2017.

He shouted "God is great" in Arabic and was shot by the police after getting out of the truck. Saipov had hoped that this act would lead to him becoming part of the militant group, the Islamic State.

Saipov is expected to serve his sentence at a maximum-security prison in Colorado, where inmates spend up to 23 hours a day locked in their cells.

Five of Saipov's victims were tourists from Argentina, a 31-year-old woman was from Belgium. Two Americans were also among the victims, while 12 others were injured.

Addressing the court before sentencing, Saipov appeared to repeat praise for the terrorist group and suggested he was unmoved by the evidence he had heard.

He escaped the death penalty after a jury last week failed to reach a unanimous verdict in the case
