Paramilitary and military forces, backed by Moscow, are going armed to the homes of Ukrainian citizens in the occupied areas to collect votes.

They are going armed with machine guns and asking citizens to go to the polls.

Sources of the British newspaper "Telegraph" said that the referendums on the annexation by Russia of the regions of Ukraine are taking place using weapons. The same situation has been reported by local Ukrainian officials, as well as posts on social networks.

At the same time, Ukrainian media have published videos. Voting, which Ukraine and the West have described as a "fake referendum", began on Friday morning and is expected to continue until Tuesday in the Russian-controlled areas of Kherson, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Donetsk.

Citizens enter voting centers to vote in transparent boxes, while armed guards stand outside. Ukrainians have claimed they were told that if they refused to vote their families would be killed.

Luhansk Mayor Sergey Haidai said in a Telegram post that Russian forces are forcing residents to vote and also stressed that they are prohibited from leaving the region during the referendum period, between September 23 and 27.
