A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest was killed by security forces while trying to force his way into an FBI building in Ohio.
The suspect initially managed to flee the Federal Bureau of Investigation building, and was later shot dead in a rural area of ??Cincinnati after a shootout that lasted several hours.
Officials say they are investigating whether the man, identified by the media as Ricky Shiffer, had ties to far-right groups.
The FBI chief said the violence and threats against the agency should be deeply troubling to all Americans. Police have not officially identified the suspect killed in Ohio and have not commented on the motive for his attack.
Police sources told US media that the suspect may have been present at the Capitol building in Washington on the day of last year's unrest by Trump supporters.
The Ohio incident comes as US officials warned of increased threats against the FBI after it executed a search warrant on Monday to raid former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
