A French senator was arrested yesterday in Paris after allegedly drugging a member of parliament with the intention of sexually assaulting her.
Le Monde reported that the prosecutor's office has confirmed that Joël Guerriau was arrested on suspicion of having given a woman a narcotic substance that would cause her to lose control of her actions so that he could sexually abuse her.
The victim filed a lawsuit saying she was given the substance on Tuesday at midnight. The woman became unwell after having a drink Tuesday night into Wednesday at the home of the senator, with whom she was not in a romantic relationship.
The senator was arrested yesterday and taken into custody. According to KRM, his office and house were searched, where the narcotic substance "ecstasy" was also found.
The 66-year-old banker by profession was part of the French Senate since 2011. He is currently secretary of the Senate and vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs, Defense and Armed Forces Committee. He was elected in the Loire-Atlantique region of western France and is a member of the centre-right Independent group. Two sources said the victim is a member of parliament, but prosecutors have not provided any details on her identity.
